Wow -- lab diamonds have really taken over! There was so much resistance to them at first, but now they're everywhere. So let's chat about them.
First things first: are lab diamonds real diamonds? Yes. Yes, they are! A lab diamond is made of the exact same stuff as a mined diamond -- pure carbon, arranged in the same crystal structure. Same hardness (a 10 on the Mohs scale, the top of the chart), same sparkle, same ability to handle everyday wear. Honestly, even a trained gemologist can't tell them apart just by looking. It takes special equipment to figure out where a diamond was grown.
The only real difference? Origin. A mined diamond formed deep in the earth over billions of years, while a lab diamond was grown in a matter of weeks using technology that recreates those same conditions.
So why are so many people choosing them? For starters, they skip mining altogether. That means no worries about where your stone came from or whether it's tied to conflict or unsafe mining conditions. For a lot of my clients, that peace of mind is a big deal.
And then there's the price (a big one!). Lab diamonds usually cost a fraction of a mined diamond with the same size and quality. That can mean a bigger stone, a higher-quality stone, or more room in the budget for a truly custom setting -- which, let's be honest, is my favorite part. One thing to know: lab diamonds don't hold their resale value like mined diamonds have. But if you're buying a ring to wear and love every day (and I hope you are!), that usually doesn't matter much.
So, mined or lab? There's no wrong answer here. Some people love the romance of a stone that took billions of years to form, and others love the value and transparency of lab-grown. What matters most is that your piece feels like you. And if you're torn, let's talk it through -- helping you find the perfect stone is my favorite thing to do.
